Alexander is one of the most rural parts of Buncombe County, and the creek-fed ground along the river is better for a pool than that description suggests. We install all four shell types here, precast, fiberglass, gunite and container, which matters on lots this varied.

The community lies about ten miles north of Asheville, strung along the French Broad River between Weaverville and Leicester. Alexander grew up around an inn on the old Buncombe Turnpike, the road that drovers used from the Tennessee line down into South Carolina, and the shape of the place still follows the river that the turnpike followed.

Two kinds of ground sit side by side here: fertile bottom land in the river corridor, fed by a network of creeks, with steep terrain rising on either side of it.

Bottom land along the river is the easy ground, close to level and farmed for generations for exactly that reason. On a lot like that the digging is straightforward, a crane can get where it needs to be, and the money goes into the pool and its surround instead of into moving earth.

Ground on either side of the river climbs, and it climbs quickly. A property four hundred feet up the hillside from a farm on the flat is a completely different project with the same mailing address.

Rural access is the Alexander question

More pools out here are decided by the driveway than by the yard, so the route in is the first thing we look at.

Long private drives, gravel surfaces, farm gates, low branches and creek crossings on bridges built for a tractor instead of a crane are all ordinary in Alexander. Any one of them can rule out a full-size fiberglass shell, which is up to 16 feet wide and travels on an oversized trailer that needs a route in and a turning space.

None of that rules out a pool, and three of the four shell types answer it. A container pool is 8 feet wide and arrives on an ordinary flatbed. A compact precast shell gets into places a full-size one cannot reach. A gunite pool is built in place, with the material arriving on a normal truck and going through a hose, so gunite answers a lot nothing can be delivered to.

On a lot in the French Broad corridor, water is the design problem, and the creeks feeding the bottom land are part of it.

Low ground near the river can carry a high water table, poor drainage or floodplain constraints that decide where a pool can legally and sensibly sit. Higher up the valley sides the problem inverts, because runoff comes down at you instead of sitting underneath you, and it has to be routed somewhere other than across the pool area.

Both versions are answerable, and both need answering before the shape of the pool is settled instead of after. On a wet lot the pool often wants to sit raised rather than sunk, which turns retaining you would have needed anyway into part of the finished structure.

Septic, and where an Alexander pool can actually go

Septic is the rule out here, and on a septic lot the tank and the drain field decide where the pool goes instead of you.

Nothing gets built over the tank or the drain field: not the pool, not the patio, not the equipment pad. The field also has a reserve area that has to stay clear so it can be replaced one day, and that area is easy to build on by accident because there is nothing to see on the surface.

Finding where the tank, the field, the reserve and the buried lines actually sit is one of the first things that happens on a site visit. On a large rural lot there is usually room to work around all of it, which is a real advantage Alexander has over a tight in-town yard.

Which pools suit Alexander lots

On the bottom land, all four shell types are usually on the table if the driveway and the crane position hold up. Precast and fiberglass go in fastest, gunite suits a design that needs a shape or a depth nothing is molded in, and a container pool suits a narrow yard or a hard drive.

Level ground is also the case where a larger pool genuinely makes sense. On a hillside lot the site work quietly eats the budget, and on river bottom it does not, so more of what you spend shows up as pool.

What a pool costs in Alexander

A shorter season, and the case for a heater and a cover

Out here on the ridges the nights are clearer and colder than they are in town, and night temperature is what sets the length of your season. Midsummer takes care of itself, and the two ends of the year are where a pool is won or lost.

May and September are the months that separate a pool you use for three months from one you use for six, and the limit there is water temperature more than air temperature. Clear nights pull heat out of a pool fast, so an unheated pool gives back overnight much of what the day put in and warms weeks later in spring.

A heat pump and a cover are what answer that. Neither one improves July, and both of them turn May and October into months you can actually use.
