Pool Installation in Mars Hill, NC

Mars Hill sits at over 2,300 feet in the hills above the French Broad valley, home to Mars Hill University and some of the widest mountain views in Madison County. Pool Builders of Asheville installs precast concrete, fiberglass, gunite and shipping container pools throughout Mars Hill, on everything from rolling farmland to steep ridgeline lots.

Pool installation for Mars Hill properties

Mars Hill sits at over 2,300 feet, the highest of our Madison County service towns, in the hills above the French Broad valley. It is home to Mars Hill University, founded in 1856 and the oldest college or university in western North Carolina, and to some of the widest mountain views anywhere in the county. We install all four shell types here: precast, fiberglass, gunite and container pools.

Gabriel Creek runs through the west side of town, with Big Branch and its tributaries draining the surrounding land toward the French Broad River. That drainage pattern is a useful guide to the town’s two kinds of ground.

Rolling farmland versus ridgeline

Along Gabriel Creek and its branches, Mars Hill has genuinely rolling, workable farmland, similar in character to the flat stretches found in Leicester along Turkey Creek, if a little less level. A pool on ground like this is a comparatively straightforward build: a crane can generally reach the pad, and the site work bill stays reasonable.

Toward the ridgelines that give Mars Hill its long views, the land climbs and steepens quickly. These are the lots people buy specifically for the view, and they usually pay for it in site work: longer driveways, real grade to manage, and drainage that needs to be planned around rather than assumed away.

Building in Mars Hill

Every property around Mars Hill is different from the one next to it. The site visit is where we measure everything that decides the price. We check how much the ground slopes and how deep the rock is. We also locate the septic system and measure the access.

Access on a Mars Hill ridgeline lot

A steep, view-oriented lot raises the same access questions we check on any hillside property in our service area. A long gravel drive with a tight switchback, or a narrow lane with overhanging trees, can rule out a 16-foot fiberglass shell on an oversized trailer before the design stage. A container pool travels on a standard flatbed and needs far less room to maneuver. A gunite pool needs no oversized delivery at all, since it is built in place from material that arrives on an ordinary truck.

On the rolling ground along Gabriel Creek, access is a more routine question, and it is far less likely to be the deciding factor.

Septic and Mars Hill lots

Most residential property in and around Mars Hill, outside the immediate university and town center, is on septic rather than municipal sewer. The system’s tank, drain field and reserve area have to stay clear of the pool, the patio and the equipment pad, exactly as on any septic lot in our service area.

On a rolling farmland lot there is usually ample room to work around the septic system. On a steep ridgeline lot, especially one where the buildable, gently sloped ground is limited, siting the pool and protecting the septic system often has to be solved together, which is one of the first things checked on a site visit.

Which pools suit Mars Hill lots

On the rolling ground, all four shell types are typically on the table. Precast and fiberglass suit a buyer who wants a finished shell and a shorter installation. Gunite is the right call when the design needs a custom shape or depth. A container pool is a strong fit for a narrow or difficult ridgeline lot.

On the steeper view lots, a pool set raised rather than sunk is frequently the better answer, turning the retaining structure the grade already requires into part of the finished design, and keeping the pool at the same level as the deck where the view actually is.

What a pool costs in Mars Hill

Installed ranges here match the rest of our service area: container pools from around $55,000, fiberglass from $60,000 and precast from $65,000, both running up to around $150,000, and gunite from $90,000 upward.

A rolling lot along Gabriel Creek is close to the easiest building this region offers. A ridgeline lot with a long driveway and real grade runs higher, largely because of what it costs to get a crane and equipment to the pad. The rest is size and everything you build around the pool: decking, patio, tile, rockwork, a shaded structure.

What actually drives pool cost here

The shortest season in our service area

At over 2,300 feet, Mars Hill is the highest town we build in, and it has the shortest comfortable pool season to go with it. Nights are cooler here earlier in the fall and later into the spring than almost anywhere else we serve, and water temperature follows the air down fast on a clear mountain night.

A heat pump paired with a cover is less of a luxury here than in the valley towns. It is usually what turns a pool that is genuinely usable for three months into one that is usable for five or six.

Mars Hill, NC FAQs

Is Mars Hill good ground for a pool?

A lot of it is. Away from the university and the town center, Mars Hill has real rolling farmland along Gabriel Creek and its feeder branches, and that ground digs easier than most of Madison County. Higher up, toward the ridgelines that give the town its long views, the grade picks up and site work becomes the bigger line item.

Does the elevation up here change anything about building a pool?

It mostly changes the season, not the construction. At over 2,300 feet, Mars Hill runs several degrees cooler than Asheville on a given day, and clear nights at this elevation pull heat out of a pool fast. It does not stop us building any of the four shell types here, it just makes a heat pump and a cover a more useful add than they'd be at a lower elevation.

Which county issues my pool permit in Mars Hill?

Madison County. We handle the whole process from application through final inspection, so you don't have to deal with the county office yourself.

How much does a pool cost in Mars Hill?

Container pools from around $55,000, fiberglass from $60,000 and precast from $65,000, both running up to around $150,000, and gunite from $90,000 upward. A rolling lot along Gabriel Creek sits at the easier end of that. A ridgeline lot with real grade and a long driveway runs higher, mostly because of what it takes to get equipment to the pad.
