The town sits at about 2,116 feet, twelve miles down US 25 from Asheville, wrapped around the Asheville Regional Airport. The French Broad River forms the western edge of town, and the ground between the river and the airport is close to level river-valley bottom. On a lot like that the digging is straightforward, a crane can get where it needs to be, and the money goes into the pool and what surrounds it rather than into moving earth.

A longer season at this elevation

At just over 2,100 feet Fletcher sits lower than much of Western North Carolina, and midsummer takes care of itself.

The season is decided at the other end of the year. May and September are the months that separate a pool you use for three months from one you use for six, and at this elevation the limit is not air temperature but water temperature.
